Hebrews 6. Denying God

“​For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.”

Hebrews 6:4‭-‬6 ESV

This verse could easily be seen as a verse to support “once saved always saved”. In which, I can agree with, as far as, if you have tasted the things of the Lord, you have been in His presence, you have been filled with His spirit, how could you deny He exists or turn your back from Him? 

So, in essence, once you are saved, I mean completely surrendered and filled saved, there is NO way you could lose your salvation. 

However, I believe you still have the choice to turn away. But, how could one, after being in His presence. After being completely satisfied in Him with the Joy and strength and peace He gives, turn away?
If you surround yourself with people who would encourage you to turn away from the Lord, who would encourage you to sin, then I can understand, how that could influence you to turn from God. 
I think of the story of The Prodigal Son. He was part of the family of God. But, he chose to go his own way. He chose to no longer have the blessings of the father. But, to do his own thing. Now, thankfully he, by the Holy Spirit, turned from his Wicked Ways and went back. He humbled himself before his father. This, being a demonstration of a a child of God turning away and then coming back. And, how is still accepted after he repented. And that is the key: he repented. 

If we continue in sin with an unrepentive heart, we will not enter into heaven.

The prodigal son may have ran away and denied his father  but he remembered how good his father was.  And I believe, that is an example of the holy spirit’s wooing the son.  

So if we deny the Holy Spirit fully, then we are denying the work of the Lord in our lives and what He’s done.  Therefore,  like it is mentioned in this passage, it is an “impossible ” thing to do. So, I agree with this passage that once one has truly encountered God you cannot deny Him. 

Sure, we can struggle and sin on occasion. But, to completely deny God and the work of His son, Jesus, and the wooing of the Holy Spirit, would be difficult to do. 

In conclusion, it is important to put yourself around those who love the Lord. Who can encourage you in your faith. Who can pray with you. 

Remember the way to hell is wide. And the path of the righteous is narrow. So we must keep our eyes fixed on Him. Placing yourself around those who are Godly. And as we draw closer to God, He will mature us and grow us in ways that, we then will be able to disciple and council others in their walk.
