Should the government help the those in need? This is really a question for the church.
I find that it has been helpful. The government has helped us out personally(food stamps etc) but because the government has helped so many, so many in this country have depended on the government.
Here is where it might sting a bit…CHURCH…WE are to be helping with meeting the needs of the people. Remember the verses
“And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.” Titus 3:14 .
“ Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.” Ephesians 4:28
“Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.” Matthew 5:42
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4
Yet, we in the church have lived above our means. We can not even spare extra to give to those in need. We struggle to give tithes or even to missions or to offerings. I am guilty of this too. We live pay check to paycheck. That is not how it is suppose to be. We are to have wisdom with the money we have. We are to be thinking of others as well. After all, that is what Jesus was all about. He met the needs of the people.
We are to help, as in such a way, to minister to others as well. As we help them financially and even physically, we then can in turn help them spiritually. Every way pointing to Christ. Now I know we are to help those in the church first. But, we are to help those outside the church too. Always bringing glory to God and leading them to Him. That of course should be our goal as a christian.
Not that they should take advantage of us. But, to help them out. Give them wisdom in how to do better that they to can turn around and help others. My father does this very thing. He has helped those who could not get a job. He had men who were struggling because of past mistakes. He taught them how to work on a house remodel. As he taught them skills, he would share the word of God with them. So he would help them spiritually as well. We know that when we help someone spiritually their whole perspective and outlook on life changes. They better themselves. Not them, but the relationship they have with the Lord betters them.
This is exactly what Jesus did. He would meet the needs of the people and in turn they would know Him better. Follow Him. Serve the Lord and help others. If Jesus did this we ought to also.
However, the government, has taken it upon themselves to fulfill what the church should be doing. People get in debt, and are not bettered in any way. Generation after generation depending on the government and not teaching their children to do better, to try better. The government would rather keep the individual always coming back. The government doesn’t care about the individual as a person. As long as they keep depending on the government they have control over their lives.
However, we the church, we are suppose to care. To lift another up. to point someone intot eh right direction. That is why the church needs to step up and help people. We don’t just give them a hand out, But a hand up. It is they way of the Lord to meet the need and make them better.
“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” James 1:27
“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10
“But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.” 1 John 3:17-18
“”The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.‘” Matthew 25:40
Church wake up and be doers not just hearer only. Do the Work that God has called us to do. Helping those in need. Not just in monetary need but, in spiritual need as well. That is the heart of Christ.
