The abundant life pt 1

Image result for abundant

Abundant means: According to Cambridge Dictionary It means(using it to sound smart) “more than enough” But because I am American I will use Merriam-Websters Dictionary, “a: marked by great plenty (as of resources) b: amply supplied”So does it necessarily mean monetary? No!

Lets look at People in scripture that God gave “abundant life” too.

Abraham- God blessed him with livestock and so much more. He became the founding father of our faith.

Jacob- God blessed him not only with livestock, but with children. Many children.

See back then that was what “abundance” meant. Lots of livestock and children to tend them.lol. But more importantly a relationship with God. A life with peace. etc.

Fast Forward a few years. David and Solomon was blessed with a fruitful kingdom. Yes that was monetary. Gold, land, palaces all perks of being blessed by God..as a king that is.

We read in the New Testament Jesus says, “give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 So this passage was talking about Judging at first. Just to put it into context. How we treat others it will be done back. Sure we can go there with this verse that follows. But, I think that God is also saying more in this passage. God is pretty consistent. He doesn’t change after all. So if God is saying give to others and it will be given back to us…then we see something there. You see it too? That something is..He wants to give to us and give more abundantly. That is how God works!
Now I am not saying, “give a million dollars and God will give  you a billion.” He may, but I think what this is saying is, give with a good heart, God sees our heart and wants to bless us. He wants to give us favor. Bless our land, our family, our finances, etc. Not that life will be perfect, but He does want to give us this abundant life. We see it over and over in scripture

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us..”Ephesians 3:20

What do you suppose this means!? I will let you ponder that one. I thinks it means that God wants to give us things. Not necessarily monetary. But just a blessing. It may be that our cupboards are never bare, a bill miraculously payed, a good position at work, the ability to have children, your car fixed and running well, someone coming over to shovel your drive way..the possibilities could go on and on.

Ever read this Malachi 3:6-11(read it)

This talks about the tithe However, God says don’t with hold your tithe because He wants to “open up the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need“. Not just to set you for the day. But go above and beyond till there is “NO MORE NEED” What a God we serve!!

Then there are these verses:

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Deuteronomy 30:9 “The LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers..”

John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

These verse seem great! In fact, these are promises to us. So why are there so many problems in the christian realm? People think that we have to be poor or lowly all because of this verse:

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” Matthew 5:5

Many see this verse and think “yep God wants me to be poor because money is the root of all evil” (a misquote of scripture there..the LOVE of money is the root of all evil) So why do we think we can not have a prosperous life? I mean look at all the verses above. God wants us too. And the “blessed are the poor in spirit” is in reference to our humble attitudes. Not our financial situation.

I know I know.. I am not talking about prosperity gospel. Please do not get confused with that. That is different. and even heretical. I don’t think that is what God is saying when He says He has plans to prosper us.

But I will dive into that in my next blog.

To be continued..
