multitasking: one foot in the world

A while back there was a study done on whether or not a person can do two things at once. Sure this sounds a bit deceptive because we all know we can walk and breath at the same time. But what this study was proving was if one could concentrate on two things at once. for further information you can follow this link(provided I correctly inserted it)

The point I am trying to make is: Can a christian be lukewarm?

We hear it preached from the pulpit that we are either hot or cold and NOT lukewarm. Why? Because we can not SERVE two masters. Again, we ask, “Why?” because in serving two masters one is confused on a teaching or which one is right. Paul touches on this a little bit:

“10I appeal to you, brothers,a by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13Is Christ divided?..” 1 Corinthians 1:10-12

Though this is a little off track of my main point, it is telling us that we must follow one and only one. I think the same is true when we bounce from church to church. We can easily get confused on what each church is teaching. Find one and stick to it. Be dedicated to its teaching if it so lines up with the word of God and what you believe.

So going back to the two masters, when we follow one master we are concentrated on doing the work of the One and following after their teaching and teaching it to others.

SO again, if I have not lost you yet (haha), WE can not do two things at once. WE can not serve the world (Satan) and serve God.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew 6:24

“So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” Revelation 3:16

So can we effectively do both? According to scripture..NO!! According to science(in a round about study) NO!!

When we serve God, we put all our efforts and all our concentration(or we should) on doing what Jesus teaches, listening to Him, being used by Him etc. When we have one foot in the world(satisfying our flesh) and one foot in following Christ, we are damaging not only our walk with God, but our testimony as well. We not only will be confused but will confuse others.

We confuse ourselves

It is like this: a little bit of yeast will ruin the whole batch.(1 Corinthians 5:6-7)

A little bit of sin will damage our whole testimony and if we continue in it it will lead us to destruction.

“27Add iniquity to their iniquity, And may they not come into Your righteousness. 28May they be blotted out of the book of life And may they not be recorded with the righteous. 29But I am afflicted and in pain; May Your salvation, O God, set me securely on high.” Psalm 69:28

Then there is this…

“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels” Revelation 3:5

Now here, Revelation is saying “HE who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments” meaning: when we have accepted the work on the cross and no longer continue in our sin. Sure, we will stumble and fall, but if we continue in our sin it will take us further and further from the Lord. Then one day, we no longer want to follow Christ and we reject what he has done for us.

Final thought

As Christians, we can not multitask when it comes to serving the Lord. Do not let Satan tempt you by the flashy things of the world. Ways we can avoid falling into lukewarmness:

  1. Prayer- Speaking to God daily. Constant communication with our Lord and Savior will satisfy. He fulfills every desire.
  2. Bible- Spend time in the scriptures. Study it. This is another way of communication with God.
  3. Fellowship- Spending time with people of like mind will help you satisfy that need for human interaction. Also, this will help you be accountable for your actions. Hang out with believers…Who says Christians can not have fun?
  4. Go out- Allow the  Lord to use you. Be willing. There is complete satisfaction when you are about the Fathers business. Also accountability there too.
